Why is my LED lamp flickering? And what can you do about it?

Flickering LED lighting usually indicates a problem with the dimmer, driver, residual current or installation. This article helps you identify and resolve the cause.

Flickering lighting is annoying and tiring for the eyes. It can even indicate a technical issue. LED lamps are sensitive to power supply and switching, which means that a single fault in the system can already cause a visible effect.

The good news: in most cases, the problem is easy to fix.

The most common causes

1. Incorrect dimmer
A traditional halogen dimmer often does not work properly with LED. The low power consumption prevents the dimmer from delivering a stable signal, causing the lamp to flicker or buzz.

2. Poor or unsuitable driver
In 12V systems, the driver plays a crucial role. A non-dimmable or unstable driver causes flickering as soon as the voltage fluctuates.

3. Residual current in the switch
Some switches allow a minimal current to pass through even when switched off. LED is so efficient that this small residual current can already be visible as flickering or glowing.

4. Voltage spikes
In older installations or when heavy appliances are on the same circuit, voltage spikes can occur.

5. Defective or low-quality LED chip
Cheap LEDs often have a less stable internal driver, which causes flickering over time.

What can you do about it?

Step 1: Check whether the lamp is dimmable
A non-dimmable LED combined with a dimmer will never work properly.

Step 2: Replace the dimmer with an LED-compatible model
A trailing edge dimmer provides the best results.

Step 3: Check the driver for 12V lamps
Always choose a driver that is suitable for LED and dimming if required.

Step 4: Test with another lamp
If another lamp burns steadily, the problem lies with the fixture or the driver.

Step 5: Consult an electrician
In case of persistent voltage issues or older installations, professional advice is recommended.

How can you prevent flickering in the future?

Choose quality lamps with reliable drivers
Use compatible dimmers
Avoid overloading circuits
Pay attention to IP rating in humid areas
