How much do you save with LED lighting? (incl. examples)

LED lighting consumes up to 90% less energy than halogen and lasts much longer. With a simple calculation, you can immediately see how much you can save per lamp, per room and per year.
Switching to LED sometimes feels like an investment, but the return is enormous. LED uses less power, lasts longer and therefore provides direct savings on your energy bill. Especially now that energy prices are higher than before, lighting makes a bigger difference than you might think.
To make the savings tangible, we start with a simple comparison.
LED vs halogen: power consumption
A typical 50W halogen lamp only needs about 5W in its LED equivalent to provide the same light output. That’s a 90% reduction in consumption.
Example calculation
Usage: 8 hours per day, 365 days per year
Electricity price: €0,30 per kWh
Halogen 50W
0.05 kW × 8 × 365 = 146 kWh per year
Cost: 146 × €0,30 = €43.80 per year
LED 5W
0.005 kW × 8 × 365 = 14.6 kWh per year
Cost: 14.6 × €0,30 = €4.38 per year
Savings per lamp per year: €39.42
What if you replace ten lamps?
10 halogen lamps → €438.00 per year
10 LED lamps → €43.80 per year
Total savings: €394.20 per year
In larger homes or offices, this amount increases quickly.
Lifespan makes the difference even bigger
Halogen lifespan: ± 2,000 hours
LED lifespan: ± 25,000 hours
For every LED lamp, you would need to buy more than ten halogen lamps. This means:
Fewer replacement costs
Less waste
Less maintenance
How quickly do you earn back LED?
Suppose an LED lamp costs €6. With annual savings of almost €40 per lamp, the payback time is less than two months.
Extra advantage: less heat
Halogen is inefficient and converts much of its energy into heat. LED produces hardly any heat. This means:
More energy-efficient
Safer
Better for fixtures and ceilings
Anyone switching to LED today saves not only electricity but also replacement and maintenance costs. For anyone who truly wants to save on lighting, LED is the logical choice.
